Summary

The UK youth mental health charity, Stem4, created the Calm Harm app to help young people manage their urges to self-harm.

The app is designed to help young people to carry out activities to target common causes for self-harm:

  • Distract – learning self-control techniques to reduce the urge to self-harm
  • Comfort – ways to care rather than harm
  • Express – ways to express feelings
  • Release – safe alternatives to self-harm

Breathe – breathing activities to help keep calm and manage symptoms of stress and anxiety. Young people can also:

  • Track and record their progress
  • Add their own tasks and activities
  • Set passwords for privacy
  • Personalise the app. 

Calm Harm was developed by Dr Nihara Krause, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, with young people. The app draws on basic principles of Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT).  

Stem4, the UK teenage mental health charity which developed the app emphasises that the app does not replace treatment.
