Summary

Positive Mental Training has been used to help recovery from stress, depression and anxiety in the UK National Health Service in Edinburgh for 12 years and is used by doctors and nurses for their own wellbeing and resilience, as well as for their patients.
The app uses audio tracks to help people:

  • Break free from a cycle of worry, low mood and depression
  • Combine deep relaxation with resilience techniques
  • Improve sleep, lifts mood
  • Decrease burnout.
The app is free to download and comes preloaded with several tracks including:
  • Mindfulness
  • Body relaxation
  • Confidence boosting.

The complete Positive Mental Training programme has 12 tracks, some of which are in-app purchases.
Each track lasts for 18 minutes, which can be listened to as a course or dipped in and out of as needed.
The app includes a progress button to track your journey and you can set up listening reminders in your calendar.
At the time of writing, the app is approved by the UK National Health Service and features in its NHS Apps Library (run by NHS Digital).

Review:

“Positive Mental Training is available as the iOS/Android app Feeling Good(now approved by NHS Digital App Library)

The app is free to download, and comes pre-loaded with:

  • 1st track of Positive Mental training
  • shorter taster tracks – Confidence Boost and Body Scan -a relaxation track
  • 3-minute mindfulness
  • a spoken introduction
The rest of the programme can be purchased or ‘unlocked’ free of charge with an in-app login username & password given to you by some health professionals or in workplaces, depending on where you live or who has a licence.

A great feature of the app is a progress monitor in the form of a tree which gradually fills out with leaves and flowers as progress is made through the programme.  We really like the growth metaphor.

You can set up listening reminders as well. The app has 2 mental health questionnaires, so you can assess your health status, this also helps us to assess the helpfulness of the programme (anonymously).”
