Summary

The app:

  • monitors how individuals use their Android smartphones day-to-day to track symptoms
  • collects data from both healthy volunteers and patients with Parkinson’s disease to develop tests for early detection of Parkinson’s disease.
Individuals select which parts of their day-to-day phone usage that the study can track. The app runs in the background to capture how the person uses and interacts with their smartphone during daily activities.

The data captured in the background by the iPrognosis app can include:

  • Characteristics of the person’s voice when making a phone call
  • How steadily the person holds their phone during calls or typing
  • How well the person types
  • How far the person travels each day.

The app can also take into account:

  • Identified emotional content from text messages, without storing actual content
  • Facial expressions from stored photos, without copying the photos from the participant's device.

The app is for Android smartphones and is part of the GData Parkinson’s Disease study. It is financed by the European Union Horizon 2020 innovation research fund, and delivered through research partners in Greece, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Austria and the UK, with plans to expand to Australia.

Review:

“By downloading the iPrognosis app, you will donate data to the "GData" study, towards the development of early Parkinson’s disease detection tests. The iPrognosis app will record data from your everyday use of the smartphone, eg when talking on the phone or sending a text message.
Data recorded will be pseudonymised and uploaded securely on the Cloud when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi. You can choose what is being recorded and withdraw at any time.”
