Summary

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) game in which the user acts as a roving CDC epidemiologist aiming to solve the causes of outbreaks of infectious disease. 12 outbreaks around the world are featured, all based on actual events dealt with by CDC specialists. Users are given clues and tips on investigating infection, then study on-site facts in an attempt to piece together the reasons for an upsurge in disease cases. Users are required to decide how to deal with the outbreak (for instance, by requesting more laboratory analysis, or calling for help in examining more people, or by isolating settlements through forcible quarantine). Points are awarded for successful action, leading to a final achievement award.

Review: “What makes this a good app? 1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the original app to include new outbreak scenarios, and enable the player to post their scores on Facebook or Twitter. 2. It is a fun and engaging way, for those who may be interested in a career in science, to learn about disease outbreaks and the role of CDC disease detectives.”

Review:

“In efforts to spread the skills needed to deal with public-health issues such as outbreaks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made learning more fun, through games and app such as ‘Solve the Outbreak’ for the iPad. Solve the Outbreak puts you in the shoes of a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS). Playing the game presents opportunities to use clues, analyse data, solve the scenario, and save lives in this virtual world, but also helps teach the public more about the process behind handling a real outbreak.”

Review: “Scientists and gamers alike can now play disease detectives through 'Solve the Outbreak’, a new iPad app from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The app lets users play the role of an officer in the agency’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), navigating three fictional outbreaks, all based on actual events that EIS officers have solved. Players get clues, review data, and make decisions to determine the cause of the outbreak.”
