Summary

Aims to help people who have a permanent or temporary speech impediment as a result of head or neck cancer to communicate with their family, friends and healthcare professionals (the app is also of value to anyone with a speech impairment). Contains 130-plus icons and preset phrases about needs, emotions and daily difficulties, all spoken by a male of female voice. The icons and phrases are divided into 9 everyday categories, including 'in bed', 'at the dinner table', 'emotions', etc. A 'favourites' function collects icons chosen as preferred by the user. New icons can be added (personalised with a picture and a voice). Text can be entered and spoken by the voice synthesiser; sound can be turned off, or played at a higher volume through an amplifier function. A profile with photos, allergies or intolerances can be set up. The 'draw' function permits the app to act as a sheet of drawing paper, with the user's finger drawing what needs to be communicated. Optimised for viewing on tablets, but also works on smartphones.

Review:

“The app was built with advice from Dr Licitra of the Cancer Institute of Milan, with sponsorship from us, the Associazione Italiana Laringectomizzati (AILAR), and the Federazione Italiana delle Associazioni di Laringectomizzati e Pazienti Oncologici (FIALPO), and the Associazione Italiana di Oncologia Cervico-Cefalica (AIOCC). The app is an effective tool for patients with tumours of the head or neck, and also for people who have difficulty speaking. The app allows you to activate a voice synthesiser from a repertoire of phrases that best meet the basic needs of these types of patients. You can also write short sentences to be sent to the speech synthesiser, producing either a male or female voice.”
